Odell Beckham Jr., Giants WR, suspended for 1 game by NFL
Coming off the Loss Vs Panthers and Josh Norman himself, Odell Beckham Jr has received a One Game Suspension.
He said players took the bat to NY as a way of remembering cornerback Bene Benwikere, who suffered a season-ending broken leg against Atlanta.
However, new details involving a pregame incident involving a baseball bat might have been the catalyst that set the wheels in motion for what was to come regarding the on-field scuffles between Norman and Beckham.
The suspension was imposed by NFL Vice President of Football Operations Merton Hanks, who in a letter to Beckham noted the reasons for the disciplinary action.
The helmet-to-helmet hit is nearly always the result of an attempt to tackle a player directly involved with the play; aka a player with the ball or a player guarding or blocking for the player with the ball.
Panthers cornerback Josh Norman and Beckham tangled from the beginning of Carolina’s 38-35 victory and there was lots of pushing, shoving, wrestling, late hits and trash talking between them.
Beckham, the 2014 Offensive Rookie of the Year, has 91 catches for 1,396 yards and 13 touchdowns, tied for the league lead.
It would be nearly surprising if the NFL didn’t fine Norman for this: the last thing the league wants is players feeling like it’s acceptable to touch officials, particularly during a heated moment. He would give me a sweet epic battle, but that right there was a melee.
Exactly. Beckham’s out-of-control anger was so apparent that even the New York tabloids turned on the Giants’ most talented player in Monday’s editions, with the New York Post calling Beckham a “Giant Jerk!” on its front page and the New York Daily News labeling Beckham “Bad Santa”. I am Glad he is suspended, but I do think that the league and or the team should have came down harder on OBJ and more added to reprimanding of him whether it be via another game or $$.
NFL Media analysts Nate Burleson and Maurice Jones-Drew discuss the on-field behavior Beckham and Norman displayed, along with their related personal experiences. In this era of concussion crazed rule changes, Beckham is lucky that he was not ejected from the game. “… He left his feet trying to take me out”.
GIANTS FOLD AGAIN: This was the fourth time NY has lost in the final 7 seconds, including three on the final play. The Giants rushed for 161 yards on 27 carries, a 6.0 average in what was their best performance in the last two seasons. How was his shot unlike Cody Wallace’s helmet-to-helmet late hit on David Bruton Jr. in Sunday’s Steelers-Broncos game, for which he is likely to just get fined?
RUN RASHAD: The Giants finally produced their first individual 100-yard rusher this season.
Although he threw an interception on his second career pass and three for the game, Moore beat a blitz with a quick toss to Dez Bryant in the flat, letting the receiver get around cornerback Darrelle Revis for the 10-yard touchdown.
Coughlin continued: “There are qualities that Odell brings to this football team the likes of which I’ve never seen”. That’s when a player isn’t just potentially ruining somebody’s livelihood, but doing something that could possibly ruin someone’s life.
