Officer assigned to guard NYC mayor shot with pellet gun
Two teenagers were taken into police custody Sunday in connection with a pellet-gun attack on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s security team officer, authorities said. She was taken to the hospital for treatment and released.
She and her partner, who was also in plainclothes, determined it was likely a pellet gun fired in their direction from 170 East End Ave. Mayor de Blasio was not home at the time, and the NYPD says there is no threat to his security.
The area around the 54-year-old mayor’s house was cordoned off following the shooting, and several streets nearby were blocked, New York Daily News reported. The officer is already back on the mayor’s detail, a police official said.
Cops quickly entered Verbitsky’s building, where they questioned his girlfriend, Gabrielle Gleyberman, 19, inside a 10th-floor apartment, sources said.
He was charged with assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, reckless endangerment – 3 counts, criminal possession of a forged instrument and criminal possession of a weapon. Four are sealed and one is a juvenile arrest.
