Officer involved in fatal shooting of 6-year-old could be released
Derrick Stafford, 32, of Mansura, and Norris Greenhouse Jr., 23, of Marksville, are both charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.
“Right now they’ve run into a few problems with the paperwork for the property bond, and they are in the process of correcting it”, said Anderson.
Marksville Police officers and Ward 2 City Marshal Deputies 32-year-old Derrick Stafford and 23-year-old Norris Greenhouse Jr. are accused of shooting and killing 6-year-old Jeremy Mardis, and critically wounding his father Chris Few after a vehicle chase.
An attorney for Few says police body camera footage shows Few with his hands up, but Edmonson says only a select group of people have seen the video.
Associated Press report that the possibility that the officers could post bond and be released Monday, despite the murder charges, didn’t sit well with a few townspeople who gathered outside the jail.
Sources say Few was released from the hospital Wednesday.
“I can assure you only State Police investigators, the Attorney General’s office, who has just signed on to the case, and the judge who signed the arrest warrant and that’s it”, Edmonson said.
It’s still unclear what led to the initial auto chase between four city marshal deputies, including Stafford and Greenhouse, and Chris Few.
Edmonson did say that the investigation into the shooting is ongoing and that the State Crime Lab is expected to complete an analysis of ballistic and other evidence sometime this week. State police said the boy died wearing his seatbelt in the front passenger seat. Because they are officers, it is standard procedure that they be put in isolation while they are in custody.
He also said that while Few’s condition is improving, he has not yet been told that his son died at the scene.
