To both charges, Ciccolo answered, “Not guilty”. The indictments had been expected after Ciccolo’s arrest July 4.
He also bought a pressure cooker the day before his arrest, apparently inspired by the Boston Marathon bombers who used two pressure-cooker devices to kill three people and injure more than 260 in 2013, authorities said.
On his way out of the Hampshire Court, U.S. Attorney Kevin O’Regan declined to answer any questions.
Authorities were tipped off by his father, Boston Police Capt. Robert Ciccolo, who alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation after his son said he wanted to join the Islamic State group.
The suspect has been held at a maximum security facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island. In a video taken after his arrest and played in court this month, Ciccolo defended Islamic State’s hostage executions and agreed with an Federal Bureau of Investigation interviewer’s assertion that in his view all Americans should be considered “enemies”.
Hoose said that he is not sure whether the government will pursue further charges against his client. He said after court Wednesday there have been no discussions about additional charges or a plea deal. A status conference is scheduled for September 29th.
