Officer shot in neck during domestic dispute
Police say this is when Stalans, 44, of Kerr Way, Maryville, started shooting from his father’s garage.
After the first visit from deputies Thursday, Berrong said Stalans went to his father’s attic and retrieved a gun that he been stored there, cut off a lock and then went to buy.45-caliber ammunition. They responded quickly and waited for other officers to arrive before approaching the suspect.

Brian Keith Stalans, 44, of Kerr Way, Maryville, was taken into custody after the fatal shooting. The sheriff says the gunman had an active order of protection against him in another county, and had been flagged as a “dangerous individual” in the national crime database.
Authorities were called again to the home later Thursday by someone who described acts of violence and the involvement of a firearm. This is when Moats was shot in the neck.
A police officer responding to a dispute between a father and son in eastern Tennessee was shot to death after helping get the elder man to safety, authorities said Friday. Deputies remained at the shooting scene into the night, with much of the road closed, while deputies from neighboring Loudon and Anderson counties helped out with patrols.
“At the time, deputies did not have probable cause to arrest Brian Stalans”, according to a BCSO news release.
Jail records did not indicate whether Stalans has an attorney.
The officer worked with the 5th Judicial Drug Task Force in the narcotics division.
Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp did not reveal the identity of the deceased officer, saying the officer’s family had not yet been notified. The deputies were able to take Stalons into custody and he was transported to the Blount County Detention Facility.
It was the second time law enforcement were called to the residence during the day for a domestic violence incident, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported.
Chief Crisp says Stalans has three small children and had been with the department for several years.
