Officials Release Hours of New Sandra Bland Jail Footage
Duhon said the video will include footage of Bland sitting in a holding cell, making phone calls and having her mugshot taken.
She was found hanged in a jail cell three days after she had been pulled over and detained for a minor traffic violation.
“There’s no footage that indicates to me that Ms. Bland was treated unfairly or was mishandled or mistreated in any way, shape or form while she was in the Waller County Jail,” Duhon said, according to Reuters.
U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch didn’t mention the Bland case at a previously scheduled speech in Houston, just 50 miles southeast of Waller County, but said one of her top priorities is ending an “epidemic of distrust” between communities and law enforcement. “We are evaluating all the threats as they happen”.
We now have video documentation of Sandra Bland’s time behind bars at the Waller County Jail.
Skeptics have claimed jailers took part in a multi-agency cover up, even photographing Bland’s lifeless corpse for her mugshot and then passing off her death three days later as a suicide. On the other hand, there are no comments as yet from Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis regarding the toxicology report. The quantity was per liter, and it was a sign enough that Bland had used Marijuana before meeting her death.
At that point she complied and the two walked to a sidewalk out of view of the camera, which recorded a steady stream of invective directed at the trooper. The jailer let her use the phone at the booking desk instead of the pay phone in her cell, and she was seen talking with animation during some of the calls. He acknowledged some people will still have doubts, also that he wishes authorities had released the new video earlier than Tuesday.
“We’re seeing people fabricate information”, Duhon told reporters.
A number of rumours have circulated online, including the suggestion that Ms Bland had already died before she arrived at the jail. Bland was laid to rest on Sunday, July 26th.
Questions have been raised about what occurred after her arrest as well. There was no audio for the footage.
Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw has confirmed he will testify at the hearing, along with Limestone County Sheriff Dennis Wilson, who has for years voiced concerns about problems facing Texas jails.
“She said, ‘He’s not answering, it’s going straight to voicemail”. The incidents are connected, he said and Waller County is being painted with the same brush as the original arrest by state Trooper Encinia.
