Ohio governor tells electors not to vote for him over Trump
However, all but two of the 50 U.S. states have chosen to award all electoral votes to the candidate that win’s that state’s popular vote, even if the margin of victory is a single ballot.
Kasich made it clear that he doesn’t want any part of this strategy to not have Trump become president.
There had not yet been a Republican defection at the time, but Baca told the magazine that all they needed was one.
“I am not a candidate for president and ask that electors not vote for me when they gather later this month”, Kasich said in a statement. “That’s when the election is complete”, said Chris Suprun, the Texas elector, in an interview on “New Day” on Wednesday.
A group calling itself “Hamilton Electors” is encouraging Republican electors to defect. If the electors failed to produce a majority victor, the U.S. House of Representatives would choose the president.
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said Wednesday that a Texas Republican elector’s decision not to vote for Donald Trump may lead state legislators to pass a law requiring electors to support the victor of the statewide popular vote.
Two Colorado electors filed a lawsuit Tuesday to overturn a state law requiring electors to cast their ballots for the presidential candidate who won their state. The Democrats could move all their votes from Hillary, a most unlikely event, and Trump would likely still have his majority.
Kasich isn’t the only elected official that is criticizing the group.
Politico reported Monday that advocates of the latest stop-Trump plan have been in touch with Clinton allies, though Clinton and her campaign have not commented on the plan. Some of them support Green Party candidate Jill Stein’s demands for recounts in three states, though there is no chance that will change the outcome of the election. Their plan is to gather 37 other electors to cast their votes elsewhere, preferably to a moderate Republican like John Kasich of OH, punting the result to the House of Representatives.
Kasich is no fan of Trump.
“What happens is national news stories will pop up and everybody will go find out how they can contact us and then they start reaching out”, he said.
Yes, you read that correctly: December 19.
Both of these presidential electors will be in Jefferson City on December 19 to officially was their electoral college votes for Trump – even though there’s an effort to change their mind.
In “It’s You’re Write” on November 29, Thomas Fraser of Crystal Lake attempted to give us a civics lesson on the Electoral College.
