On Monday, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Food and Health, Ko Wing-man, said that the city should be “psychologically prepared” to deal with its first case of Zika, the South China Morning Post reported.
State health officials have not released details on the Suffolk cases, but the unnamed Nassau resident traveled to an unidentified country, developed mild symptoms in August and has since completely recovered, the New York Post has reported. Health authorities have said Zika could infect up to four million people in Latin America and spread worldwide.
Two women in Pennsylvania who recently traveled to countries affected by the virus tested positive. “It’s just an observation that the numbers have gone up”, said Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County Medical Director Thomas Herchline. But except in pregnant women, the virus nearly always is a mild illness, and for most people testing is not necessary, the department says.
Pregnant women who have recently travelled to areas affected and suffered an illness they suspect to be Zika are advised to see a doctor.
Many people infected with the virus don’t get sick. In May 2015, Zika virus was found for the first time in the Western Hemisphere in northeastern Brazil.
The World Health Organization has declared the Zika outbreak a global health emergency.
The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis (red eyes).
The governor said state officials are doing all they can to ensure that Florida is prepared for a possible Zika outbreak.
The experts believe that Zika Virus can possibly lead to a rare neurological disease, known as Guillain-Barre syndrome. It is largely transmitted through mosquito bites and is linked to the birth defect microcephaly, a congenital condition associated with incomplete brain development and abnormal smallness of the head.
