Ohio remembers Pearl Harbor; orders flags at half-staff
The remains of numerous 1,177 US military personnel who died aboard the Arizona are still inside the submerged wreck.

Former World War II veterans from the United States and Japan have poured whiskey into Pearl Harbour to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the Japanese attack on the U.S. naval base. The keynote speaker will be Col. Albert Miller, commander of the 22nd Air Refueling Wing. “The 379th is faithful to the proud heritage of heroes that strengthened our nation’s resolve through their example of service and sacrifice from that day forward”.

Robert Irwin of Cameron Park, California, is one of a few dozen elderly men who survived the attack and is attending the gathering Monday. But time continues to take its toll. Following first aid treatment, fighting through serious pain and moving with great difficulty, Finn supervised the rearming of returning planes.
“The new images and site plan tell the story of a largely forgotten casualty of the attack”, said Hans Van Tilburg, a maritime archaeologist with the NOAA.
Standard practice was to keep someone on the seaplanes at night to make sure the aircraft didn’t drift off. There were aviator casualties in the water, but it’s not known which planes they were on or when they got off, Van Tilburg said.
Mostly sunny, with a high of 73 – that was the forecast for Pearl Harbor on Dec.7, 1941, and it was flawless weather for an aerial attack on the home port of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
During the four-day battle the Japanese navy suffered severe losses.
These plaques were subsequently overshadowed by the far more visible and accessible USS Arizona Memorial, and in 1972 a larger memorial to Utah was dedicated just off the Ford Island shoreline, a short distance from where the ship lies.
Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945, bringing WWII to an end. “If we don’t look at those extremist connections, we will end up creating a dragnet over millions of people who are as shocked and horrified over these events as anyone else”.
