Ohio’s Kasich to spend weekend campaign in New Hampshire
Businessman Donald Trump led with 30 percent in the poll of 409 likely GOP primary voters.
“He appears to be a person that follows through”, said Hopkins, of Moultonborough, N.H., a retired airline pilot – who used to work for Trump’s former airline.
Kasich told the Cedar Rapids town-hall audience he has Croatian roots. “I mean, c’mon now!” However, Kasich has picked up some endorsements in recent weeks, including the Boston Globe and the New York Times, as well as a number of New Hampshire papers.
With Trump not on stage, No. 2 polling Cruz was in the hot seat, and he didn’t like it, saying (probably jokingly) that he’d leave the stage if the other candidates kept getting invited to hit him.
“If you’re going to proceed after New Hampshire, you’re absolutely going to need considerable funds”, said Fred Malek, who has helped four decades of Republican presidential candidates raise money. “And so we need to start treating people in this country, not jailing them”.
The jabs go both ways.
The attacks are coming from all sides.
Stanley Hubbard, a billionaire Minnesota broadcast executive, said he’s poised to write a large check to a super PAC backing any one of his preferred candidates – Rubio, Christie and Bush, among others. Not so for John Kasich, who also left Friday, and won’t return for last-minute campaigning Monday, because he’ll be holding a town hall then in Loudon, New Hampshire.
“They’re all shooting each other up so much that none of them are going to create any distance between themselves”, Dennehy said. Rubio, 11 percent. 4.
And some voters say the negativity is a turnoff. But he said the Bush finance team is working furiously and “generating cash every day for the campaign”.
That small-donor rate is far better than those of Rubio, Bush, Kasich and Christie. He met his future wife, Mary Pat, at the University of DE and returned to his home state with her to attend Seton Hall University School of Law.
The foursome is considered to be competing for mainstream Republicans in a campaign that has seen Trump and Cruz most effectively tap populist anger and disdain for the establishment.
The agency did not provide any additional details on the Vermont senator’s request, but it is an initial step for a presidential candidate to get the protection.
But the New Hampshire debate Thursday would give Clinton and Sanders a high-profile encounter before the nation’s first presidential primary. “He essentially has taken up residence in the state of New Hampshire”.
Andy Smith, a political scientist and director of the UNH Survey Center, says voters like McCracken, who are unsure which primary to vote in, are relatively unusual.
He said many are waiting until the final few days to make up their minds because they know they can launch campaigns or deep-six them and they take their role with utmost care and seriousness. Data from a recent UNH poll shows that just 31 percent of GOP voters have “definitely decided” on a candidate.
Asked if he is confident anyone will have enough money to compete with Trump or Cruz, Hubbard said: “No, I do not feel confident”. If it happens, it would most certainly ramp up the national chatter.
Kasich’s campaign acknowledges the candidate’s appeal to moderate voters but says they are competitive among a spectrum of conservative voters as well. I’ve seen that fail in the White House right now. “He impresses me most of the Republicans”.
