Ohio’s Senate OKs ban on abortions once heartbeat is heard
Citing Donald Trump’s Electoral College victory, Republicans in OH have approved what would be the most extremist anti-choice bill in the country if GOP governor and former presidential candidate John Kasich signs it into law.
Faith2Action has been advocating for the heartbeat bill since 2011 while Ohio Right to Life has refused to endorse it, seeing it as strategically risky.
Earlier in the day, state Sen.
The Heartbeat Bill language was added to House Bill 493, which originally dealt with child abuse and neglect reporting, on a vote of 20-11, and the full legislation passed the chamber, 21-10.
Getting this bill passed has been a singular obsession of religious-right activist Janet Porter, the president of Faith2Action, who has even gone so far as to picket the homes of state legislators in her pressure campaign. After more than 90 minutes of emotional debate, the House voted 56-39 late Tuesday in favor of the changes.
“We can’t force Mr. Jordan to testify”, assistant city prosecutor Joe Schmansky told the Columbus Dispatch.

Ohio Right to Life told the Blade that the group is “putting all of our focus on the 20-week ban”. The Senate had approved the bill early past year but had to approve it again because of changes made by the House.
“We’re on the verge of a recession in our state”, Kasich said. Many states restrict abortion in the last trimester of pregnancy, except in cases where the mother’s life is in danger.
The measure now returns to Ohio’s Republican-controlled House before making its way to Gov. John Kasich’s desk for his signature. Such a bill could have grave effects for so many women, so here’s how to protest Ohio’s proposed six-week abortion ban. If he doesn’t take action, the bill would automatically become law.
Kasich has said the upcoming two-year budget, his last as governor, will be tough. “This will be ruled unconstitutional”, Schiavoni said of the abortion restriction. Though it passed the state House over a year ago, it previously met opposition in the Senate.
According to USA Today, the decision to pass the “Heartbeat Bill”, which has been around for years, is attributable to the election of Donald Trump: While Roe v. Opponents are predicting it will be found unconstitutional if it becomes law.
OH state Sen. Joe Schiavoni, a Democrat from Boardman, said the bill would lead to “expensive lawsuits” that would divert resources away from more pressing issues like the opioid crisis. They just don’t want to spend money defending an anti-woman bill the courts will promptly throw out.
