Ohio State’s Miller feeling it in legs as he switches to WR
That’s because Miller has no plans to leave the field this fall.
Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones, right, jokes with former…
Trick-play passer. Big-play receiver.
The Buckeyes got through the first week of practice relatively unscathed, Meyer said. Depending on how quickly he picks up his new position, pretty much anything his 12-year-old self could have schemed in a Madden NFL game will be on the table.
As Braxton Miler makes the switch from quarterback to receiver for Ohio State, he is feeling it in his legs.
“It was just having the wrong mindset about everything”, Jones said.
With Curtis Samuel’s move to H-back, the Buckeyes are short on depth at running back.
Ohio State’s quarterback battle was the hottest storyline of the college football offseason, and after Braxton Miller announced his move to wide receiver, it left Barrett and Jones to fight for the starting spot in fall camp.
His summer, as well-documented by social media, included a trip to the ESPY Awards, a Twitter flirtation with UFC champ Ronda Rousey and grabbing the mic at a Bulls-Cavaliers playoff game (with teammates) and hollering: “Let’s go, Cleveland!”
As for the mechanics of the position, Miller remains a novice.
Jones is the fun one, the class clown, a guy who also might rate in the top five among quarterbacks – NFL quarterbacks – in terms of talent.
Miller planned to remain at quarterback, where he starred for three years before tearing his right labrum for the second time in eight months last August.
“He’s full time, yeah, he’s full time”, Meyer said. As a quarterback you dont run.
“He’s like anyone who’s never done it before”.
“He has skills that most human beings should not have”, wide receivers coach Zach Smith said, via Seger. “He’s not great at it yet”.
You probably knew that already, but he’s meaning beyond obvious names like Cardale Jones (assuming J.T. Barrett wins the starting job). “He’s taken a lot of contact over his career”. I fell on my upper body. He reported no issues.
Jones said that will not be a problem previous year.
The best thing about being a receiver?
The two-time Big Ten player of the year at quarterback said hes been monitored running four miles during a practice.
As the days count down until the September 7th opener at Virginia Tech, Ohio State is ramping up their preparation and conditioning.
The Buckeyes likely will not ease Miller into the season because receivers Jalin Marshall, Corey Smith and Dontre Wilson are suspended for first game at Virginia Tech. The Buckeyes are in their version of camp, Meyer wanting to get the players away from the comfort of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and to some practice fields just across the Olentangy River from Ohio Stadium.
The next big step is utilizing Miller’s arm as a trick-play dagger.
Miller underwent a second surgery on his throwing shoulder almost a year ago and redshirted the 2014 season when the Buckeyes won the national championship. “That’s going to be a weapon”.
Miller also did his part to thicken the scouting report for the Hokies: “I was in the backfield [Saturday] at running back”.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pounder who threw for 1,815 yards and ran for 980 yards as a high school senior is now getting reps at receiver. Or doing all three.
Hes a team-first guy, which I really appreciate that..
There were struggles early on (a fight to the end against Navy, a stunning early-season loss to Virginia Tech, some officiating help in an overtime win over Penn State), and the team didn’t really seem to come into its own until mid-October. “I will see guys that look like starters that don’t play yet”. I’m fortunate that God blessed me that I can play any position on the field. Screw this, I’m just going to go through the motions for the rest of this year. Theyre both working theyre tails off and its one of the most refreshing competitions Ive ever witnessed, Meyer said. He planned to review the data from the first week of practice late Sunday.
“I want to be a part of it”, Gibson said. “I’m like a different person out there”.
Jones says both players want the job, but mostly they want what’s best for the team.
