Ohio State University students alerted to active shooter on campus
The suspect was identified by campus police in a press conference Monday afternoon as Abdul Razak Ali Artan.
Artan was born in Somalia and lived in the USA as a legal permanent resident, a United States official told AP.
“We’re very fortunate that an OSU PD officer was there and took quick action”, said Monica Hall, OSU director of public safety.
An 18-year-old Ohio State student, Abdul Ali Artan, allegedly injured nine people when he drove his vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians on the campus.
His motive remains unknown, but OSU officials said that the attack was clearly planned in advance.
Law enforcement officials have withheld the assailant’s identity but confirmed that he was an 18-year-old male of Somali descent. He came to the U.S.in 2014. That official also wasn’t authorized to publicly discuss details of the ongoing case and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Video from the scene showed heavily armed officers canvassing the area, with some people who appeared to be students being escorted by officers.
Jacobs said they are cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other departments on a state, local and federal level.
COLUMBUS, Ohio-The police officer who fatally shot the Ohio State University attacker on Monday was an OSU graduate who was relatively new to the force. Luckily there were so many people, he couldn’t focus on one target.
“I heard like multiple gunshots”, witness Yoon Lee said.
The attack happened mid-morning outside an engineering building, where students and teachers had been gathering following a fire alarm.
Wexner Medical Center treated two victims who had been hit by the auto, two victims who had been stabbed and a fifth victim whose injuries were still being assessed. Stone says it helped position him to respond to the attack so quickly.
ABC News reports that Artan posted to Facebook just minutes before the attack, saying, “I can’t take it anymore”.
One of the victim injuries is considered to be critical, according to reports. Two had suffered stabbing injuries; three were struck by the auto and one for lacerations.
