Ohio State Upset By MI State; Elliott and Jones Say
And here’s an incredible stat, tweeted out Sunday morning by the great Phil Steele: In each of MI State’s two landmark wins this season – over MI and Ohio State – the Spartans trailed for the entirety of the game, only grabbing the lead with time expired. “I was trying to stay on my feet as long as possible”. But Elliott rushed only twice in the second half as the Spartans rallied and eventually nailed a game-winning field goal in the final seconds, putting Ohio State’s title hopes both in the Big Ten and nationally on the ropes.
“Our two quarterbacks went in, did an excellent job and didn’t flinch”, MI State coach Mark Dantonio said. It also tossed the Buckeyes into a three-way tie in the Big Ten East with MI State and MI.
As Elliott noted, the Buckeyes have their annual game with MI next weekend. But he also said the junior running back, who used the same postgame platform to announce his intention to enter the 2016 NFL Draft as an underclassman, shouldn’t have aired his grievances to the media.
Beating Ohio State, ending the Buckeyes’ 23-game win streak, and helping MI State (10-1) get back into the College Football Playoff discussion now is at the top of his list of athletic achievements, O’Connor said.
Elliot had a string of 15 straight 100-yard rushing games snapped.
Besides a few miscues on turnovers, the Spartans dominated the Buckeyes in nearly every facet of the game.
For MI State, it’s win and you’re in. “He’s a warrior. There were just so many people at the line of scrimmage we couldn’t control it”, Meyer said. The loss was their first regular-season Big Ten game under fourth-year coach Urban Meyer. Ohio State led, 14-7, having converted a fumble recovery into a 6-yard Jalin Marshall touchdown on the previous drive. MI State responded after each one with a 75-yard touchdown drive.
Two carries by redshirt sophomore running back Gerald Holmes later, and the contest was leveled at 14.
No. 19 NAVY 44, TULSA 21 (at Tulsa, Okla.) – Quarterback Keenan Reynolds ran for 81 yards and a touchdown while directing a Midshipmen offense that rolled up 512 yards on the ground. I couldn’t disagree with him.
Now, unless a bunch of upsets happen, the Buckeyes will not be able to defend their national title. I don’t know what they were seeing. At least not like this.
The Spartans relish the role of underdog like no powerhouse program and it seemed to fuel them in the Horseshoe. Obviously, you saw how the game ended, so it was kind of that game I can’t stand. Those are tough to watch now and tough to be a part of.
When Cook did take snaps in warmup with the first team, it was apparent something was not right. MI State gave no hints as to whether he would play, but when he warmed up cautiously t was obvious something was up.
Connor Cook out at quarterback for MI State at the ‘Shoe? O’Connor checked back into the game on the ensuing play, carrying the ball for five yards to advance down to the OSU 7-yard line. The Spartans turned into an option/quarterback run team.
