Oilers knock off the Canucks in OT
■ The more you watch the Lions these days, the more you’re convinced they’ll let Andrew Harris walk after this year. “It’s not always pretty on the road, especially when you play back-to-back, but really pleased how we showed up for the last two periods”. In todays pre-game report I will bring you a few highlights from last night, “The Markoffs’ Keys to the Game”, projected line-ups and my prediction for the game tonight. “It’s a tough one for sure”.
“We played a healthy game”.
Tied 1-1 after two periods, Canucks forward Daniel Sedin was left shaking his head early in the third after somehow chipping a puck that was lying in the crease over the Oilers’ goal with Nilsson down and out following a great stop on Henrik Sedin’s breakaway seconds earlier.
“We missed our chances and that is what you are going to get 3-on-3”, Desjardins said. It’s not the league’s fault but if they’re waiting for a break from the Rogers-owned Blue Jays, they’re going to be waiting for a long time.
Nilsson then made a diving save on Radim Vrbata with under seven minutes to go before Yakupov had a good chance on Miller with 90 seconds to play in the third. Vancouver swept the five-game season series in 2014-15, posting four one-goal triumphs (one in a shootout, one in overtime) and a 2-0 victory. Connor McDavid had his first multi-point game of the season, Taylor Hall, Nail Yakupov, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each potted a goal as well. The No. 1 pick at June’s draft, who had two goals and an assist in Calgary, picked up the puck in the neutral zone and stepped around a check before feeding Yakupov for his second of the season.
The Canucks had won eight of the previous 10 against the Oilers, including all five meetings last season. Cracknell, who hadn’t tallied in the National Hockey League since 2012-13 with St. Louis, scored his second goal of the young season Tuesday at Los Angeles but was joined Friday as Brandon Sutter, Jared McCann and Daniel Sedin each netted their second. “(Saturday) night I thought we were the better team. We have been in the situation the other way, too, where we found ways to win. The team finally got together and put in a whole team effort, something I preach about every time I talk about them.
Notes: Edmonton opens a three-game homestand Wednesday against the Detroit Red Wings….
The Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets carried winning momentum into their Sunday games against the Vancouver Canucks and St. Louis Blues, respectively. As for his first National Hockey League goal, Toronto fans will be thrilled to know it came in the Bruins’ Game 7 victory over the Leafs in the 2013 playoffs; yes, the game the Leafs blew a 4-1 lead.
