Oklahoma governor grants inmate stay of execution
The last-minute swap raises more questions about Oklahoma’s capacity to competently carry out executions – a concern that has plagued the state since its horribly botched execution of Clayton Lockett in 2014. The stay will give the Department of Corrections and its attorneys the opportunity to determine whether potassium acetate is compliant with the state’s court-approved execution procedures.
“Last minute questions were raised today about Oklahoma’s execution protocol and the chemicals used for lethal injection”, said Fallin, according to MSNBC. It is followed by vecuronium bromide, which halts an inmate’s breathing, and potassium chloride, which stops the heart.
“At this point, we’re trying to find out more information”, Alex Gerszewski, a Department of Corrections spokesman, said Wednesday. “The governor will respect their decision”, Weintz said. His execution is scheduled for October. 6.
The Pope sent a similar plea this week to Georgia officials to spare the life of inmate Kelly Gissendaner.
But the 37-day stay of execution Fallin granted Glossip today in the 11th hour may in fact give his defense attorneys a chance to fight anew for a new evidentiary hearing.
“Recently discovered evidence demonstrates substantial doubt about Sneed’s credibility”, his attorneys wrote in a petition to the Supreme Court. During the pontiff’s visit last week to the USA, Francis urged Congress to abolish the death penalty.
Pope Francis wrote a letter to Governor Fallin this week seeking mercy for Glossip. Among the material is an affidavit from an inmate who said Sneed admitted lying about Glossip’s involvement in Van Treese’s death. Glossip’s attorneys also said there was insufficient evidence to convict him in the first place.
The stay was in part so unexpected because Glossip’s appeals on grounds of innocence had been repeatedly rejected. A prison spokeswoman said there are no plans to delay the executions scheduled for Cole and Grant. The renovation also happened to diminish the transparency of the process: the state eliminated from its viewing area seven seats previously available for media witnesses, reducing the total number of journalists’ slots from 12 to five, while also removing the clock from the execution chamber. “What I want to come out of that is that they finally stop executing innocent people in this country”. He died 43 minutes after his lethal injection started. A request for a stay of execution is pending with the U.S. Supreme Court.
Glossip has fought one of the drugs used in the three-drug lethal injection preparation that was scheduled to be used on him.
After Lockett writhed on a gurney and struggled against his restraints during his execution on April 29, 2014, prison officials concluded that an intravenous line at Lockett’s groin wasn’t properly set and he didn’t receive a full dose of deadly chemicals.
Glossip’s was one of the executions postponed. It rewrote its guidelines and assured federal courts from Oklahoma City to Washington that its procedures were sound.
After the Supreme Court ruling on midazolam, Oklahoma quickly said it planned to resume executions.
When learning about the role that the drug played in the delay, Glossip said: “That’s just insane”.
Branson could not be immediately reached for comment after the governor issued the stay. Oklahoma’s protocols call for the use of potassium chloride, but the state received potassium acetate instead.
“Hopefully the extra time will bring us more witnesses who know Justin Sneed is a liar”, Knight said.
The ad says there is a “breathtaking” lack of evidence in the case.
British billionaire Richard Branson took out a full-page ad in The Oklahoman newspaper on Wednesday that argued Glossip is innocent.
Glossip has received support from well-known figures including actress Susan Sarandon and Sister Helen Prejean, who is an ardent opponent of the death penalty. “This is about every person deserving a fair trial”.
Motel owner Barry Alan Van Treese discovers a $6,101.92 shortfall at the Best Budget Inn managed by Richard Glossip.
In a letter published this month, U.S. Sen. “I think execution, period, is a mistake”. “That is precisely the problem”.
Police arrested the man who came forward – Michael Scott – who says he was then questioned by Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater about his statement regarding Sneed.
