Oklahoma has eighth-highest adult obesity rate in country
According to the report conducted by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, adult obesity rates now exceed 35 percent in four states and 30 percent in 25 states.
Minnesota is the only state in the mid-west that has kept its obesity rates below 30 percent, according to the Center of Disease Control.
In 2015, Louisiana ranked highest with a 36.2 rate and was one of 25 states with rates of 30 percent or higher.
Minnesota obesity rates are lower than in previous years.
Gamble said some effective programs were developed in the state over the years, but were eliminated for a lack of funding.
She found that in rural areas of OR, children entering kindergarten have obesity rates right around the national average. This is the opposite of the national trend, where women are more likely to be obese (40.4 percent) than men (35 percent). “For instance, in 2005, 49 states experienced an increase; in 2008, 37 states did; in 2010, 28 states did; in 2011, 16 states did; in 2012, only one state did; and in 2014, only two states did”, the groups said.
Minnesota Commissioner of Health Ed Ehlinger said “achieving healthy weight for all Minnesotans is one of the key objectives for our Statewide Health Improvement Program (S.H.I.P.)”, which the Minnesota Legislature passed in 2009 as a way to combat obesity.
Nine of the 11 most-obese states are in the South, according to the report.
Colorado had the lowest obesity rate in 2015 at 20.2 percent.
The maps show the prevalence of obesity among US adults remains relatively high, despite nationwide efforts in recent years to boost families’ access to healthier foods and encourage exercise, Dr. Liping Pan, an epidemiologist in CDC’s Obesity Prevention and Control program, told Mashable.
Between 2014 and 2015, there was a decrease in four states – Minnesota, Montana, New York and OH – marking the first time in the past decade that any states have experienced decreases, aside from a decline in Washington, D.C.in 2010. In South Carolina, 21.7 percent of children ages 6 to 17 are obese.
“While the good news is that obesity rates in New Mexican adults have not dramatically increased over the past year, we know that many, many New Mexicans are struggling with serious health effects related to excess weight”, said Department of Health Secretary Lynn Gallagher.
“These families want to do better, but they don’t have grocery stores in their communities, the kids ride buses an hour and 15 minutes each way”, she said. “The obesity epidemic is taking a toll on the country’s health”.
The Minnesota obesity rates stand as an achievement in the region, because they registered a significant drop, as some of the researchers like to see it. “And eventually you will see a shift in obesity prevalence”. It steadily increased to a peak of 29.6 percent in 2013.
