Oklahoma legislator wants to ban sale of aborted baby parts
Richards’ response? It’s completely and utterly untrue.
“This video is abhorrent and rips at the heart”, Upton said in a statement with Vice Chair Marsha Blackburn, R-Tennessee, and others, pledging to “get to the bottom of this appalling situation”.
Richards, in her videotaped statement, said the video was produced as part of a continuing effort to end legalized abortion in the United States.
“We follow all laws and we try to service our patients with as much care and respect possible”.
The controversy in the USA does not seem likely to disappear anytime soon, especially in Texas, where majority Republicans have worked in recent years to reduce abortions by forcing clinics to close and weakening Planned Parenthood – primarily by kicking the organization out of the state’s Women’s Health Program in 2011 – and from the state’s smaller Breast and Cervical Cancer Services program this year. The amount of money charged per organ, which Dr. Nucatola said was between $30-$100, is used to cover transportation costs, a claim Congress plans to investigate. “In the video, one of our staff members speaks in a way that does not reflect that compassion”, Richards said.
Top Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee sent a separate letter Friday to Attorney General Loretta Lynch asking her to describe how the Justice Department enforces the prohibition against that abortion procedure, and to investigate whether Planned Parenthood has violated it. “This isn’t what people in our state want elected official to spend their time doing”.
The video depicts a woman identified as a Planned Parenthood doctor unguardedly discussing how to retrieve an aborted fetus in order to preserve fetal tissue for donation.
The national Planned Parenthood says it legally helps women who want to make not-for-profit donations of their fetus’ organs for scientific research. She says the non-profits hope to at least break-even when they accept money. Planned Parenthood countered, saying that the fetal organ sales are for reimbursement for its expenses, which the organization says is legal.
The video was recorded during a lunchtime conversation between Deborah Nucatola and anti-abortion activists posing as potential buyers for a human biologics company.
Paul said that next week he will use “all legislative vehicles at his disposal” to force a Senate vote “to immediately strip every dollar of Planned Parenthood funding”. In the video, Nucatola says that tissue donation does not have “any revenue stream”. “I think that’s very disturbing”, said Caplan.
Donating any tissue or organ for research or transplant is an expensive process, which is why the law specifically states those involved may make and receive “reasonable payments associated with the transportation, implantation, processing, preservation, quality control, or storage of human fetal tissue”. Over our 100-year history, we have continually engaged leading medical experts to shape our practices, policies, and high standards – and always will.
