Oklahoma’s Chamberlain named Big 12 Female Athlete of Year
Former University of Oklahoma softball player Lauren Chamberlain was named the Big 12 Female Athlete of the Year, the conference announced Monday. Voting is by members of the media and fans.
Chamberlain, who finished out her collegiate career this season in record-breaking style, is the second Oklahoma Sooner softball player in two years to win the top female award and the third woman overall from OU to win the honor.
On April 30, Chamberlain hit a grand slam at North Texas for the 91st home run of her career to break the all-time mark of 90 held by former UCLA player Stacey Nuveman. 399 with 23 home runs and tied for the team lead with 65 runs batted in.
Following the 2015 season, Chamberlain was named a first-team All-American by the NFCA, joining former Sooner Keilani Ricketts as the only four-time All-Americans in Oklahoma history, as well as the only OU players to be named to the first team three times in a career. Her senior season at OU, she had a batting average of. She is now one of six Sooners to be named Big 12 Athlete of the Year.
Lockett left K-State as one of the top all-purpose players in school history while becoming the program’s first four-year All-American. He helped lead K-State to bowl berths in each of his four seasons and was a third-round selection in the 2015 NFL draft. He was third nationally in receiving yards (1,515) and all-purpose yards (2,296).
Lockett broke 17 school records, including career marks for receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns that were previously held by his father, Kevin.
Lockett also led the conference in punt-return average, while finishing second in receptions per game and ninth in kickoff return average.
As a receiver, Lockett had eight 100-yard receiving games to tie a school record. She also earned All-Big 12 First Team and All-Region First Team honors for the fourth time.
Each Big 12 school submitted nominees based on athletic performance, academics and citizenship. He was a finalist for the Campbell Trophy and the Senior CLASS Award while also being named a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete. Other nominees were basketball stars Buddy Hield of Oklahoma and Juwan Staten of West Virginia, baseball phenoms Michael Freeman of Oklahoma State and Preston Morrison of TCU, Baylor sprinter Trayvon Bromell, Iowa State wrestler Kyven Gadson, Kansas hurdler Michael Stigler, Texas swimmer Will Licon, and Texas Tech high jumber JaCorian Duffield.
