Oklahoma Senator Praises US House Vote on Planned Parenthood
One representative, Steve King, R-Iowa, voted as “present” for both H.R. 3134 and H.R. 3504, objecting that the bills allow abortions in cases of rape, incest and risks to the mother’s life. The bill, which has little chance of being enacted as Democrats hold enough votes in the Senate to block it, is aimed at appeasing GOP outrage over abortion before it spirals into a government shut down that could harm party appeal.
The bill to defund Planned Parenthood was approved 241-187 with the support of two Democrats.
A sharply divided House on Friday passed two strong anti-abortion bills that supporters said would help stop an American “genocide”, but critics derided as a political “farce” to appeal to pro-life voters.
Naturally, those opposed to the vote have been vocal on Twitter, sparking the hashtag #StandWithPP, while presidential hopeful, Democrat Hillary Clinton, also weighed in, calling it “wrong”, and asserting that the Republicans should be “ashamed”. Though the bill passed the House, it is expected to die in the Senate.
For his part, President Barack Obama has promised a veto should the bill somehow reach his desk.
The decision is a hollow victory for the House, as the legislation is not likely to go much farther than this. “Their latest cynical ploy is to eliminate federal funding for Planned Parenthood health centers for one year, so that they can launch more investigations based on false accusations and flat-out lies”.
The federal government could be headed for a shutdown at the end of the month, over funding for Planned Parenthood.
Rep. Chris Stewart, R-Utah, said the videos sickened him. “This is about the gruesome practices at an organization that receives over $500 million a year from the federal government”.
Dr. Yoest testified on Thursday before the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Health, about troubling legal issues raised in the undercover videos revealing Planned Parenthood’s trafficking in infant body parts.
“We need more access to quality health care, not less”, said Esty, who volunteered at Planned Parenthood as a college freshman.
“We all share a common goal: To reduce the number of abortions in this country to zero, which makes us all pro-life”, Hanna said in a statement. Planned Parenthood denies that. Rep. Black said the money would be reallocated to thousands of community health centers instead. “This feels like deja vu”, said Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.).
However, CBS News and the Washington Post report there is no such video on the Planned Parenthood tapes.
