Olenna on ‘Game of Thrones’: The Best Memes, Tweets, and Reactions
The following contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season seven.
In King’s Landing, Cersei receives her gift from Euron Greyjoy: Ellaria Sand and her daughter Tyene. At this point, you’re probably still trying to understand this latest alliance between Jaime Lannister and Olenna Tyrell, right?
Let us know what you reckon in the comments. Maggy told Cersei that the Valonqar would choke her to death.
But in contrast to the other self-interested schemers in the world of Game of Thrones, Olenna was never particularly interested in power, influence, or, as she once called it, “that ugly iron chair”.
Before Bronn died, Tyene chucked him the antedote, on the premise that he told her that she was the most attractive woman in the world. Still, she took full advantage of her final minutes. Anything less, and the kid could have lived, married to her granddaughter.
In order to prove that he’s changed and become a psychic (or whatever), Bran revealed to Sansa that he saw what happened to her on her wedding night to Ramsay Bolton.
The fan favorite appeared in 18 episodes and typically dominated every scene with her wit and sarcasm. She was amusing, she was bawdy, she was everything we wanted for that character. Her one hope for the future, Margaery, had already been snuffed out courtesy of Cersei. Why bother? As Lady Olenna says, “golden rose soldiers”.
Olenna never could figure out a solution to the problem of the Faith Militant, and she herself left the capital after being warned by Margaery that her life was in danger from them. Again, reaction from fans seemed to place Olenna in a neutral position among the catalog of characters. While most Game of Thrones players use weapons to attack their enemies, the House Tyrell matriarch’s voracious appetite for vengeance has led to some seriously vicious verbal assaults.
With Olenna’s previous history in mind, viewers are in a position to approach Olenna’s death without heartbreak found in Robb Stark’s death or enthusiasm derived from Ramsey’s death. Olenna calmly accepts her fate, and finishes her poisoned glass of wine. She managed to manipulate her past experiences with Jamie to have him argue for a painless death without any prior conversation. Maggy told her that she would Wednesday the king, that she would have three golden-haired children, and that someone younger and hungrier would come down the stairs down behind her, Showgirls-style. Upon first meeting Brienne, Olenna compliments her magnificence, for example, praising her for knocking her grandson Loras into the dirt “like the silly little boy that he is”. The way she got revenge on Ellaria is very reminiscent of the way the Mad King forced Brandon Stark to watch his father burn alive. We’re tackling the world’s most sour candies in Freaky Foods, Joe Gorman is masquerading as a famous DJ, and we look at the difference between pubs in the country and pubs in the Big Shmoke.
Game of Thrones Season 7 episode 3 is going to have a major battle where the Lannister and the Targaryen forces clash, until it turns out those are actually two different battles.
