Olympiacos’ Finnbogason hits out at Arsenal
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger threatened to stop his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s game against Manchester United after he was asked a question about his adversary Jose Mourinho.
Wenger came in for widespread criticism from both fans and pundits after leaving out Petr Cech against Olympiakos when stand-in David Ospina was at fault for one of the goals in the 3-2 Champions League defeat.
After falling behind to Felipe Pardo’s deflected opener, Arsenal equalised through Theo Walcott. “I have two world-class goalkeepers”, a livid Wenger told reporters ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with table-toppers United.
W: You come to the game and assess: was I right or wrong.
Never before had the Gunners lost their first two group games and they now face a desperate scramble to maintain their 15-year sequence of reaching the competition’s knockout stage.
Speaking to the media at his post match press conference late last night, Wenger confirmed to Arsenal.com that Koscielny has indeed suffered a hamstring injury which will make his a major doubt for Sunday’s crucial showdown with United.
It’s not just Arsenal who are now in trouble in Champions League, the other English clubs have been losing too.
Rooney then ended an 11-game goal drought in the Premier League as he bundled in his 171st league goal for the club, drawing him level with Denis Law in third place in United’s all-time list.
“I do not want to come back on that”. I think you (the press) lack a bit of creativity in the press at the moment, that you follow a bandwagon that is very very, very, very boring. And I know many things that you don’t know.
“We got back into the game well but we gave them straight away the 3-2 lead and that was the turning point”, said the Frenchman, whose side saw 65 per cent of the ball.
“It s not because of that we lost the game”. “It’s something historic for us”, he said.
Even by Arsenal s sloppy defensive standards, this was a new low for Wenger s men, but he was adamant it wasn t the worse European result of his reign.
“Why in a game that you have to win would you drop your only world class player?”
To another question about Ospina, Wenger added: “If you watched really the game (against Olympiakos) and you come to the conclusion we lost because of Ospina I question your knowledge in football”.
