Olympic champion Alptekin loses 1500-meter title for doping
“In January 2013, the IAAF [International Association of Athletics Federations] charged the athlete with an anti-doping rule violation on the basis of her Athlete Biological Passport”, read a CAS statement.
Alptekin has agreed to annul all her results dating back to July 29, 2010, which would include gold medals at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games and 2012 European Championships.
Last week the IAAF said it was suspending 28 athletes as a result of suspicious findings in doping tests.
CAS said “abnormal values” were found in blood samples collected from the athlete between July 2010 and October 2012.
Alptekin’s victory at London 2012 came as a shock and followed her improving by a substantial 17 seconds over the course of the year. The Turkish Athletics Federation cleared Alptekin of any doping charges in 2013.
Tomashova, the 2004 Olympic 1500m silver medalist, missed the 2008 Olympics due to a two-year doping ban.
Her teammate and training partner Gamze Bulut looks set to inherit her compatriot’s gold medal, with Maryam Yusuf Jamal of Bahrain likely to be upgraded from bronze to silver.
The fourth-place runner in the London race who would be in line for bronze is Tatyana Tomashova.
The 29-year-old has also been banned for eight years, meaning she is ineligible to compete until January 9, 2021.
Alptekin also forfeits her appearance money and prize money earned since July 2010.
Expert independent witnesses said her explanations were “unsubstantiated and/or scientifically unsound…”
