Olympic organizers suspect ‘isolated’ sabotage at village
An Associated Press analysis of the water completed previous year “revealed dangerously high levels of viruses and bacteria from human sewage in Olympic and Paralympic venues, viruses “that are known to cause respiratory and digestive illnesses, including explosive diarrhea and vomiting, but can also lead to more serious heart, brain, and other diseases”.
One of the earlier concerns about the Olympics in Rio focused on the safety of the water some athletes will be forced to compete in.
“We just have to keep our mouths closed when the water sprays up”, said Dutch sailor Afrodite Zegers. “The problem with Rio-and it’s a problem with many larger urban capitals-is there was not good urban planning”, she explains.
That’s what health officials are advising after organizers admitted that clean-up efforts at Rio de Janeiro’s Guanabara Bay have failed and competitors will basically be swimming in a large outdoor toilet bowl.
Nonetheless, despite government pledges to treat 80 percent of the sewage drained into these waters, they were recently described as a “toxic stew”.
The water in Rio has been found to be highly contaminated.
Authorities claim the portions of Guanabara Bay that will be used for competition are ready to go, but one doctor begs to differ.
Olympic officials are scrambling to put the final touches on the village in time for the massive swell of athletes in the coming days.
Garbage bags are seen floating in Rio’s Guanabara Bay. ‘What we’ve been told is they’re going to clean the course prior to each day, they will go on course and ensure that won’t happen’.
“Foreign athletes will literally be swimming in human crap, and they risk getting sick from all those microorganisms”, Becker said (emphasis ours).
It is about time the organizing committee for the Olympic Games takes things into control and actually finds a quick and viable solution to all the problems facing the athletes and tourists coming to attend the event. When health experts are advising athletes to keep their mouths shut while competing, you know you have a problem.
