Olympic Star Michael Phelps Talks DUI Arrest
The effort was the latest impressive outing by Ledecky, who has deferred her enrollment at Stanford University in order to focus on her training for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Right from the striking profile shot and introspective quotes flanking the unadorned Phelps – no medals gracing his neck as in past covers – it is obvious this story is different from past features on the most decorated Olympian in history, as is this Phelps different than those previously featured. As he began competition Thursday, finishing third in the 100-meter butterfly and 10th in the 200 freestyle, he bubbled with the same enthusiasm and ambition he felt during his first time in Minneapolis. “I didn’t want to do it anymore”.
“I’ve come a long way in the a year ago”, he said. “Anything, really, is possible”, he said. “I worked, recovered, slept, and took care of myself more than I ever had”.
“I found myself feeling happier and happier”. I’m hungrier now than I was leading into 2012.
Nobody more so than Phelps. Hes the first one there for practice, after a period before the previous Olympics when Bowman could hardly count on him to show up at all.
How scary! It wasn’t until the swimmer’s arrest that the world truly realized he had a complex relationship with alcohol.
In other action, Sam Tierney won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.82 and Chase Kalisz was quickest in the 400 medley, touching the wall in 4:18.50. That propped up his confidence, which had sagged under the weight of his personal struggles.
Phelps had announced his retirement after the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where he took home four gold medals and two silver ones.
It is not just Phelps himself who thought he might be in mortal danger: his coach, Bob Bowman, had feared something similar might happen.
We are all human beings, and its OK to seek help if you need it, Phelps said.
“Now, he’s the first one there”.
“I gave him a few harsh reality”, Lewis said.
Two-time world championship finalist Noemie Thomas, of Richmond, B.C., added a bronze in the women’s 100m butterfly with a time of 58.23. I wound up uncovering a lot of things about myself… Phelps declined to reveal his goals for the upcoming year, beyond making the Olympic team; those always have been a secret between him and Bowman.
He still has goals – “very big” and “exciting” ones.
I havent been disqualified since like 99, I think, he said. “But I would like to have a father in my life, and I’ve been carrying that around for 20 years”.
