Olympics-Briton Ennis-Hill on course for heptathlon repeat
“She’s just got to stay positive”.
Ennis-Hill, 30, said she was still undecided on when to retire.
“I think it’s a mix of thinking back to the last few years”.
“I can go back and analyse all the different events and think ‘Oh, if I had done a bit there, got two more points there.’ You know it was won by the better athlete on the two days and Thiam performed out of her skin”.
Ennis Hill’s score would have been comfortably good enough for gold in London four years ago; a testament to Thiam’s remarkable campaign.
Brianne Theisen-Eaton of Canada took bronze with 6,653 points. “She has to decide, ‘Am I satisfied, am I happy?'”. But having struggled with injury problems in the lead-up, gold was beyond her grasp, though she made it into the medals with her best performance of the year so far. It’s been a while since I had any alcohol’.
Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Jessica Ennis-Hill delivered one stellar performance each in their Olympic pentathlon battle on Friday to leave it pretty much neck and neck ahead of tonight’s events.
At first she could not lift weights above her head and the explosive power which makes her such a phenomenal athlete was sapped.
Motherhood had changed everything, she said.
In an incredible race which was won by Almaz Ayana of Ethiopa in a new world record of 29:17.45, 42 year old Pavey performed admirably as she led the British contingent home in 15th place with a time of 31:33.44. I don’t want to be that.
Ennis-Hill had to settle for a best throw in the shot of 13.86m and admitted she was “devastated” with the effort after throwing around 14.50m in training. ‘It amounted to a silver medal so there’s no element of disappointment. “She’s had two great days she wasn’t going to give that up”.
“I had prepared that I would move out at kilometre 35 and my body was responding very well, as well as my movement”.
Meanwhile, Johnson-Thompson’s chances of bronze bit the dust after a sub-par 6.51m leap in the long jump and a bad performance in the javelin.
Ennis-Hill was undoubtedly the poster girl for the London 2012 Olympic Games and she lived up to the hype by blowing her competitors out of the water and taking hole Gold.
Since winning gold in 2012, Jessica has added more family support, marrying childhood sweetheart Andy Hill in 2013 and giving birth to son Reggie in 2014. Minichiello has left the door open for her to return. “Oh she’s injured again”.
On her future plans, she said: “I still want to be active and keep fit and be involved in sport in some element and get people active and inspire them”.
“It is just a really unusual time in my career and it is all new to me and it is going to be big changes”.
