Olympics: IOC Chief Says WADA Hacking ‘Outrageous’
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) called on Russian Federation to help stop the hacking of its computer systems as medical records of 25 more athletes including three-time Tour de France victor Chris Froome were revealed on Thursday.
“WADA deeply regrets this situation and is very conscious of the threat that it represents to athletes whose confidential information has been divulged through this criminal act”, Director General Olivier Niggli said in a statement.
Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko denied accusations of governmental interference when he spoke to reporters in Athens, Wednesday. The 31-year-old has won the Tour de France three times, under constant scrutiny following a dark period for elite cycling and latest developments seemed to have caused little concern in his camp.
The statement on behalf of Wiggins said the leak was an attempt to undermine the credibility of WADA and thats something for them to deal with.. Everyone knows Brad suffers from asthma, his medical treatment is British Cycling and International Cycling Union approved and like all Team GB athletes he follows Wada regulations to the letter.
Even though initially it appeared as if the hackers were targeting United States athletes only, that no longer seems to be the case as the new release includes files on several British Olympians too.
The hacking group, known as APT28 and Fancy Bear by USA cyber-security researchers, was also blamed by WADA on Tuesday for posting medical data about U.S. athletes Simone Biles, Elena Delle Donne, and Serena and Venus Williams.
“We can say without a hesitation any involvement in such actions on the part of official Moscow, the Russian government or any Russian secret services is strictly out of the question”, Peskov told reporters.
The Brit openly admitted in June to being granted a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) – permission to use a banned substance that aids performance for health reasons – twice in his career, evidence of which is now visible online.
While Froome, who was seen using an inhaler during the 2014 Criterium du Dauphine, said he was not concerned by the leak.
Richard Ings, the former Australian Anti-Doping Agency chief agrees with Dmitri on their nationality.
The World Anti-Doping Agency had its records hacked and leaked earlier this week.
Fancy Bear is believed to be the same group that hacked into the files of the Democratic National Committee this summer.
WADA permits the use of certain substances on the banned list by athletes provided they are able to prove they are required to treat an illness or condition.
A spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected WADA’s statement blaming Russian hackers as unfounded.
“We go on exposing the athletes who violate the principles of fair play by taking doping substances”, the group said in a new entry, called WADA databases Part 2, on its website. Stay tuned for new leaks..
