Olympics-Rowing-United States extend unbeaten run with gold in women’s eight
Carter heaved an American record 20.63 meters to snatch gold from Adams, who had been seeking to become the first woman to win three straight Olympic titles in an individual athletics event. A classic Michael Phelps performance ended the swimming legend’s career with 23 Olympic gold medals before handing over the Rio Games centre stage to Usain Bolt.
“Okay, America, incredibly classy crew, but that does not take away from the silver medal”. On a stunning final morning of the rowing regatta, the British octet’s fine race brought with it a deserved podium finish. “We laid it on the line”.
The latter medal clinched the United States’ 1,000th Summer Olympics gold medal.
“It’s possibly the greatest choke in Olympic history”, said 100m world record holder Cate, who finished fifth.
CHOPPY WATERS: While worries about water pollution marked the run-up to the Rio Games, it was really the whipping wind that stirred up trouble during Olympic rowing.
“It is fantastic to see Elinor achieve at the highest level in cycling”.
Make no mistake, she was under pressure, she just handled it. “She leads by example”. “I’m very proud of this team”. “What an absolute hero”.
But she doesn’t plan on competing in the Olympics again.
She remembered the time, two years earlier, when she was standing with Cristo.
Speaking after her win, James told the BBC: “I was so desperate for that medal”.
Looking up at the statue on a glorious Rio Saturday was comforting, “it was just calming”, she said. My mum’s never been on a long-haul flight.
And then she just completely dominated the race.
While the teams’ lineups won’t be released until an hour before start time, we haven’t heard a peep about Phelps possibly not racing. In the last quarter of the race, the New Zealand duo of Rebecca Scown and Genevieve Behrent, who had started slowly, sprinted through the USA and Denmark to claim silver, while Denmark claimed their first-ever medal in this event in the bronze medal position.
The U.S. women’s eight won its 11th consecutive major title Saturday, claiming its third Olympic gold medal in a row (no pun intended).
The men’s eight were Scott Durant, Tom Ransley, Andrew Triggs Hodge, Matt Gotrel, Peter Reed, Paul Bennett, Matt Langrdige, Will Satch, with Phelan Hill coxing. “These guys were magnificent today, absolute gladiators”.
The women had endured a worrying start and were last at the 1000m mark.
The U.S. finished in 6 minutes 1.49 seconds, 2.49 seconds ahead of Britain.
Houghton hailed all the women who helped get the team to the Olympic podium, saying: “It’s not only about us nine girls”.
The Americans, who failed to medal at last year’s world championships, had looked in peril when two-time doping violator Yulia Efimova gave Russian Federation the lead on the breaststroke.
“We’d rather celebrate the fact that the Olympic Stadium looks attractive today with a full crowd”, said Rio 2016 spokesman Mario Andrada. “It is very exciting to think of it in those terms and to realise that we are on the doorstep of that awesome achievement”.
“Sport can be so much pressure but at the same time, sport is supposed to be fun and a great experience”.
Lightweight double scull women gold goes to Ilse Paulis and Maaike Head, Netherlands positioning the Dutsch team third place in rowing ranking tied with New Zealnd.
