One change the Tennessee Titans should make: offense
The Jets completely contained QB Marcus Mariota (21-of-39, 274 yards, no touchdowns, one interception, three yards rushing on three carries), who found no running lanes a week after his highlight-reel 87-yard touchdown run.
Titans interim head coach Mike Mularkey faced the Jets for the seventh time as a head coach. Marshall is having a great first season with the Jets, as he has totaled 89 receptions, 1,187 receiving yards, and 11 receiving touchdowns.
The score in the second half was Titans 8, Jets 3. Marshall raced up the right sideline for a 69-yard touchdown reception.
“It was one of those games we wish we could have back and start it over”, Titans linebacker Brian Orakpo said.
The few positives on the day were the experience Mariota and his young teammates gained from facing a veteran Jets defense. Antonio Andrews took a direct snap and launched a wobbly, but accurate touchdown pass to Mariota lined up on the outside.
He’s the catalyst for Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker tying an National Football League record against the Titans, one the dynamic duo could hold for themselves if things fall into place these last three weeks of the regular season and possibly as soon as Saturday night at Dallas.
Meanwhile the Titans defense struggled for the second week in a row. “We’re taking it one game at a time and looking past no one”.
“The guys did a great job of selling it”, Mariota said. “I got like five of them to hand out to wide receivers and make an Instagram post, something cool”.
Fitzpatrick finished 21-of-36 for 263 yards and no interceptions as the Jets (8-5) extended their winning streak to three games – their first three-game streak since November 27-Dec.
If they play the final three games like they did losing to the New York Jets, that spot should be pretty safe.
Anchored by yet another stoic defensive effort, Gang Green took a 27-0 lead into halftime and never looked back. What the Jets got was even more. A 14-play drive on their opening possession was capped by Fitzpatrick’s 16-yard toss to Decker. Bullock had his first miss of the season with the Jets, just pulling it wide on a 53-yard attempt.
Searcy later left with a hamstring injury. They went from elite to easily beat during that five week span and have had to overcome a lot of adversity.
The Titans caught a bad break when the communication device went out to the field, or upstairs. In other words, Just Give All of Us the Damn Ball. “We’re all in this thing together trying to win and we’ve all got that common goal”.
“You can see us taking some plays off”, Walker said. The Jets will need to handle the Cowboys in the same fashion as they did the Titans if they want to maintain momentum heading into their huge match up with the 11-2 Patriots in week 16.
“The old Harry Douglas probably would have scored”, Pryor said, smiling, “but he’s got a couple [more] years on him now”.
