One dead in shooting at Philadelphia homeless shelter
Police searched Monday for a homeless man who they believe killed one shelter worker and wounded another a day after he was evicted and taken for a mental health evaluation. He is accused of killing 43-year-old Edward Barksdale and wounding 26-year-old Lamond Barham.
The incident occurred around 6 a.m. Sunday inside the Station House Transitional Shelter on the 2600 block of North Broad Street. Investigators said the shooter had been identified by the surviving employee.
Fox 29’s Jennifer Joyce has more from the scene. A man in his 40’s died at the scene.
Officials continued Monday to urge the city’s homeless to seek out shelter given frigid temperatures. They did not wish to comment on camera. Ginaldi said police are considering the 32-year-old gunman, who is still on the loose, armed and risky. He was hit five times, including once in the head, police say. Authorities said he returned Sunday morning to get his belongings, but apparently got into an argument with an employee, pulled out a gun and opened fire.
Residents of the shelter told NBC10’s Drew Smith that they awoke to the sound of gunfire and saw one of the victims lying in a pool of blood and a man running from the building.
Shelter officials confirm there are no metal detectors inside but they do have a security plan in place with trained staff members.
“We will examine what we do now and see if there’s anything we have to change and we’ll do that”, Goode said.
‘They love their work and people who work with them love them, ‘ said Goode, who served as Philadelphia mayor from 1984 to 1992. He was last spotted passing the railroad tracks behind the shelter.
