One dead, six wounded in SC shooting
Three Florence County deputies and four Florence city police officers were shot by the suspect, Hopkins. “Units be advised, shots are still be fired at this time”, the dispatcher said.
McMaster said, “Please, take this opportunity to reflect on what their sacrifice means to you”.
The suspect, 74-year-old Frederick Hopkins, was charged with murder and six counts of attempted murder on October 5.
It’s unclear whether authorities have determined why the suspect opened fire on officers. One of Heidler’s officers died in the shooting. The station says that person’s condition his unknown.
He remembered slain Sgt. Terrence Carraway as “my brother”.
“He was my friend, my brother”, Heidler said.
“I was out there and it seemed like it was forever, but it was not”, he said.
The court wrote that Hopkins was ordered to jail after failing to return the money as part of a previous order. There was a hearing on Friday in family court, but Clements did not provide any additional information. The subject was barricaded in the residence with children, authorities told reporters. Last month, the area was deluged by flooding after Hurricane Florence. Officials anticipate he’ll be released later Friday and transferred to a detention center in Richland County, before being taken back to Florence County. He was well known in the community and coached in the Police Youth Athletic League. The mayor says Carraway is now a squad supervisor and a valued employee.
A high-powered rifle was used in the attack, the source said.
“I have been shooting competitively since 1984 and lovin” it.
In 2016, Hopkins posted photos on Facebook of guns set up for target practice, bragging that he was the state’s 2011 “3-Gun Silhouette Champion”.
At least five law enforcement officers were shot, one of them fatally, near the city of Florence, South Carolina, on Wednesday, before a suspect was arrested, according to local media and emergency management authorities.
Carraway is the 43rd officer to be killed by gunfire in the line of duty this year. Hopkin’s wounded six officers and killed one, 52-year-old Sergeant Terrence Carraway.
Hopkins earned his law license after leaving the military but was disbarred a few years later for mishandling money.
Hopkins is also a former attorney who had been disbarred in SC, and is married to prominent local divorce lawyer, Cheryl Turner-Hopkins, The Post-Courier reported. He was charged in 2015 and 2017 for “running at large” (crimes related to animal abuse), reports WFYMY News.
Florence Police Chief Allen Heidler said the hospitalized officer was in serious but stable condition, and though the other two officers had non-life-threatening injuries, “they will be scarred for a long time”. Additionally, a 16-year-old juvenile defendant is reportedly in custody under suspicion of attempting to aid and abet the two defendants during the shooting. WPDE-TV reports Hopkins fell at the scene.
The extent of the other officers’ injuries is not yet known.
Of the three surviving police officers, one suffered a graze wound to his head and was paralyzed on one side.
