One in Five Americans Still Think Obama is Foreign-Born, According to Poll
Sixteen percent of Republicans polled said there is solid evidence that Obama was not born where his birth certificate says he was.
But although Obama is a practicing Christian and was raised by his mother and her Christian parents, the president’s father-Barack Obama, Sr., who lived with him only during his infancy-was reportedly a Muslim-turned-atheist.
Despite the conspiracy theorists and Trump’s recent statement that he still doesn’t really know if Obama was born in the US, 80 percent of surveyed adults do believe he was born in the country.
The president himself was able to produce a birth certificate, which proved that he was born in Hawaii after a similar poll was conducted in 2010 regarding his actual birthplace, according to The Hill.
College graduates appeared to be the group most inclined to believe Obama’s protestations that he is a Christian; 63% took Obama at his word. Thirty-nine percent of poll respondents said he’s Protestant or other Christian, while just 4 percent think he’s Catholic and 2 percent think he’s Mormon. Another 11 percent said the president is not religious, while 14 percent had no opinion on the president’s faith.
One percent of Americans believe the president was born in the Middle East.
Two separate surveys held this month showed that many Republicans believe Obama is a Muslim and that he was born outside the United States. If a pollster asks “What’s your favorite color: red, green, orange or purple?” blue would barely register, since the respondent would have to think of it on their own, and orange would likely do better than if the pollster had asked the question without using a list.
Forty-three percent of the people polled who identify as Republicans said Obama is a Muslim, while only 15% of those who identify as Democrats agreed he is Muslim.
The poll interviewed 1,012 adults by phone between September 4 and September 8. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
