One killed, several others injured after church bus crashes on I-70 near
Officials said all I-70 eastbound lanes near mile marker 107 in Greenfield are closed.
According to media reports out of Indiana and Chicago, the Indiana State Police said the bus overturned, killing that child, a 6-year-old boy, and the driver had a suspended driver’s license.
ISP Captain Dave Bursten told The Indianapolis Star in a phone conversation that police at the scene had reported one fatality and multiple injuries.
The driver, Charles Goodman, 53, of Gary had a suspended license and was wanted on an arrest warrant out of Lake County for failing to appear in court for a traffic offense, police said in a news release.
Greenfield Fire Chief James Roberts said that Jacob Williams, 6, was killed in the accident and that his family was on the bus with him.
Goodman was ejected and pinned underneath the bus but was alert before being flown to an Indianapolis hospital, the police said. Chopper 8 flew over as a medical helicopter left the scene.
An administrator with IU Health says two adults and two children were being treated at two Indianapolis hospitals.
The bus was headed to a youth revival at the Greater Works Christian Center in Dayton, Ohio. “I don’t believe there’s no word to describe it”, Gardner said.
Police say the crash appears to be a result of driver error and there was no evidence of mechanical failure.
