One Missing, Four Rescued After Sailboat Sinks Near Bay Bridge
A boater rescued one adult and four children from the water about a mile north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Sunday afternoon, but a man is missing, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The 17-foot boat launched from Sandy Point, swamped and sunk stern first.
The man who is missing is the owner of the boat and reported to not be a very good swimmer, according to officials.
The Coast Gaurd, Anne Arundel Fire and Rescue, and Maryland State Police are assisting the Maryland Natural Resources Police in the search. The boat began taking on water after they had gone under the bridge and were returning to the north side of the two spans. Four children and one adult were pulled to safety by a passing sailor. None of the passengers had time to put on life jackets. There is no report on their conditions.
Officials received a call just before noon notifying them of six people in the water and that five were rescued.
Police say the 42-year-old man from Upper Marlboro was last seen wearing a red shirt.
