One senator finally ‘endorses’ Bernie Sanders
Wall Street and corporate greed is destroying the fabric of our nation. And Clinton is vulnerable on the issue.
“If a bank is too big to fail, it is too big to exist; when it comes to Wall Street reform, that must be our bottom line”, Mr Sanders said in a blistering speech.
It’s always been the working assumption that Clinton, with her widespread name recognition and more moderate track record, has a better chance of winning the general election than Sanders, whose reputation as one of the most liberal members of Congress might hinder the probability he’ll win over centrists.
Clinton’s lead is derived from her maintaining big leads among major segments of the state’s likely Democratic primary electorate, including women, ethnic voters, voters age 40 or older and registered Democrats.
For Sanders, it’s a political posture that has resonated with much of the Democratic base, but he still faces serious obstacles in his bid to undercut Clinton on economic reform.
Unfortunately, Senator Sanders has so far taken a hands-off approach to some of the riskiest institutions and activities in our economy, which were among the biggest culprits during the 2008 crisis.
She said Bernie Sanders is tackling thorny issues no other candidate would touch, such as “single-payer health care and making criminals pay even when they wear nice suits and work on Wall Street“.
And when asked by CNN on Wednesday – before his dinner speech – whether he is more electable than Clinton, the senator bluntly said, “Yes”, before explaining how he polls better than Clinton in certain head to head polls. Shadow banks did gamble recklessly, but where did that money come from? Glass-Steagall was created to keep commercial banking and investment banking separate. Nobody prosecuted. I think what you have is a situation where banks are not only too big to fail, bankers are too big to jail.
“Maybe Secretary Clinton should apologize for attacking the president in 2008 because he was too strong on gun control”, Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver said in a statement. Bernard Sanders (I-VT) speaks on his agenda for America during a news conference on Capitol Hill April 30, 2015 in Washington, DC. Sen.
Liz Kransky, a bartender from Sanders’ adopted home state of Vermont who now lives in Las Vegas, said she will be caucusing for the first time for Sanders.
But should she win the primary, Clinton will need to harness the energy of enthusiastic Sanders backers to power her White House bid, leaving her reluctant to go after her opponent with real force. “Of course he’s concerned about shadow banking”.
“When Wall Street was on the verge of collapse, Federal Reserve acted with a fierce sense of urgency to save the financial system”. Gunnel highlighted an analysis from Guggenheim Partners, an investment firm that said Sanders’s agenda would have “radical impacts”.
In so doing, she drew two contrasts – a small one with Democratic rival Bernie Sanders, who would finance his own paid leave proposal differently, and a big one with the Republican presidential candidates, who wouldn’t guarantee paid leave at all.
The politics of Clinton’s play are fairly easy to divine.
She has explicitly ruled out a return of Glass-Steagall, which was repealed when her husband was in office, saying it would not have prevented the last crisis. Bernie Sanders took to the Senate floor to blast what he called a bailout for billionaires.
“To me, it’s who is more electable”, said Al Hart, a retired social studies teacher from Ankeny who said he chose to support Clinton after listening to her speech at the museum.
But speaking with George Stephanopoulos Wednesday, Sanders dismissed that criticism.
