To say Donald Trump’s appearance at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s presidential forum in Washington was freaky would be an understatement. “I’m going to Israel, and I’ll be meeting with Bibi Netanyahu, who’s a great guy”, the presidential hopeful said, adding his dismay that the White House has been giving Bibi the cold shoulder of late.
Trump’s remarks were light on policy, with several comments that appeared to be efforts to connect with the audience, some of which caused raised eyebrows.
‘You know, I’ve got to say FDR and JFK and Ronald Reagan were spinning in their graves to hear an American president say he doesn’t believe in American leadership or American winning, ‘ Cruz said.
“I used that as an example of some deals, maybe the hardest deal ever in history to make of any deal”.
“Is there anybody that doesn’t re-negotiate deals in this room?” he said to laughs.
“I have a real question as to whether or not both sides want to make it”, said the Republican contender and billionaire real estate mogul, noting that he has more concern about the Palestinian side’s intentions.
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said Thursday that while Israel has given up a lot, he’s not sure if Israel – or Palestine – has the “commitment” to come to a lasting peace agreement. “We have a very good relationship”. “If you’re going to make a deal, you could make a great deal, you can’t go in with the attitude we’re going to shove it down your – you gotta go in and get it and do it nicely so everyone is happy”.
“Look, we show our cards too much in negotiations”, Trump said. Some thought Trump’s jokes were fine.
“I don’t think he was doing that”.
The October 1 shooting was followed two days later by a knife and gun attack in Jerusalem, in which a Palestinian said to be an Islamist militant killed two people and wounded two others, including a child.
While the forum was underway, the rival National Jewish Democratic Council tweeted out reminders that Jews overwhelmingly vote for Democrats. He has absolutely no support from President [Barack] Obama.
While Israel considers Jerusalem to be its capital, the world community has not recognized it as such while the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to dispute the territory.
His daughter Ivanka converted to Judaism upon her marriage, as a result is no longer reachable on Shabbat, the Jewish sabbath which is observed from Friday night to Saturday, he said. “He has absolutely no support from President Obama-absolutely none”, Trump said.
Candidate Carly Fiorina, a former Hewlett-Packard chief executive, said in a Fox News interview ahead of her speech on Thursday that “everything points to a terrorist attack, a homegrown terrorist attack” in San Bernardino.
“Right now other candidates are going to kiss everybody’s rear end, but Trump was honest”.
He spoke broadly about how the U.S., Israel, and the West were engaged in a war against radical Islam.
And while the candidates warned of the dangers of Islamic extremists, they also seemed to avoid rhetoric that would have offended Muslims.
