OnePlus USB Type-C adapter and charging cable compatibility issues confirmed

It wasn’t too long ago when we reported about the OnePlus2’s USB Type-C cable not being up to scratch.

Earlier this month, Benson Leung, a Google engineer evaluated OnePlus’ USB cable and adapter and noted that while these peripherals could be safe to use with company’s own smartphone, use with devices like the Google Chromebook Pixel, Nexus 6P, and Nexus 5X may damage the power source – charger, power bank, USB hub. When enquired about the issue by the Gadgets 360 unit of India’s NDTV news network, OnePlus came up with the following explanation: “The OnePlus USB Type-C cable and adapter are compliant with USB 2.0 and Type-C 1.0 protocols”. In a post from the Co-founder Carl Pie, OnePlus insists the cables are fine for charging the OnePlus 2. “Typically, if a charger has a CE, UL or CCC logo on it, it has been certified and is safe to use”, the company informed.

The usage of a component with lower resistance means in spite of being designed for a maximum of 2 amps of power, the non-standard resistor “will allow fast-charging devices to try to draw more power than a power source may allow”. Using cables that aren’t compatible can cause damage to external power supplies or the device itself, so it’s to be absolutely sure about it. Leung singled out the OnePlus USB Type-C cable and recommended that people don’t buy it for any device other than a OnePlus smartphone, and now the company itself has agreed that its USB Type-C cable isn’t fully compatible with other products. Customers in China and India will have to hoof it to the nearest OnePlus service center and turn in the cable to get a refund. The refund is applicable till December 31. A proper Type-C cable has a 56kΩ resistor, and OnePlus says it is in the process of designing a new version of its accessories that have this resistor. These would be released sometime in the coming future to permanently resolve the compatibility issues.
