Open and closed for New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day in Ottawa

Alko stores are open on Thursday, New Year’s Eve from 9 a.m.to 6 p.m. and closed all New Year’s Day.

New Year’s Eve 2015 is not a federal holiday, meaning that major government offices like the DMV and post office will be open, though they are often on limited lobby hours with some closing as early as noon.

Note that opening hours restriction will be waived for shops and hairdressers starting on January 1, which means that establishments will get to choose their opening times themselves regardless of the day or the size of the shop.

The 24/7 WalMarts in Lexington (including WalMart in Hamburg) will be open regular hours New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Shoppers will be looking to fill up their baskets – but it’s worth remembering that most supermarkets will be operating reduced hours over the New Year break. On New Year’s Day some will open from 9am until 9pm.

Stores are a bit tricky as well.

Target will be open on Friday, January 1, 2016.

Post Offices nationwide will be open on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31. Aldi: Open 9 a.m.to 7 p.m. New Year’s Eve; closed New Year’s Day. Table & Vine in West Springfield, for example, will be open New Year’s Eve until 9 p.m., and the Liquor Mart in Holyoke and Springfield and Liquors44 in Hadley, Holyoke and Northampton will be open as well.

JCPenney: open until 9:30 p.m. New Year’s Eve. The customer service points of the S Bank are open until 6 p.m. On New Year’s Day banks will all be closed and will not open until Monday, January 4.

For those planning parties, one of the top questions might be: will the liquor store be open?

Last Bus Departing from Springfield Bus Terminal will be at 6 p.m.

On New Year’s Eve, stores close at 6pm.

Toys “R” Us: Open 10 a.m.to 7 p.m. New Year’s Eve; 10 a.m.to 9 p.m. New Year’s Day.

Waste facilities will be closed tomorrow. A normal trash schedule will resume the following week.

Those who want to stay at home in ring in 2016 will have plenty of options as well.

Outlets will trade as normal today but will close early at 6pm on New Year’s Eve. Many local stores and restaurants are staying open, so check ahead of time with them and make a reservation early.
