Or Just Stealing? Ed Sheeran Faces Another Copyright Suit
Singer Ed Sheeran has been hit with a lawsuit alleging one of his songs plagiarized a Marvin Gaye classic. In June, he was socked with a $20 million suit by the songwriters who created the 2012 song “Amazing” for English singer and X Factor champ Matt Cardle over alleged similarities between that song and Sheeran’s hit “Photograph”.
The family of the co-writer of Let’s Get It On, Gaye’s famous soul track, have filed the lawsuit. Townsend co-wrote and composed Gaye’s 1973 single “Let’s Get it On”. The case was filed in the Southern District of NY federal court, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.
The lawsuit also mentioned that Sheeran was acquainted past year regarding the copyright infringement of the song.
The man behind hits for Justin Timberlake and Jay Z is crafting songs for STRONG by Zumba, a non-dance-inspired workout that focuses on high-intensity interval training, bodyweight exercises and strength training paired with music to match every move.
Along with Sheeran, the suit names Wadge and the song’s producer, Jake Gosling, as well as Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Atlantic Records and Warner Music Group.
A jury in Los Angeles a year ago awarded $7 million to Gaye’s family after agreeing that “Blurred Lines”, Robin Thicke’s hit written with Pharrell Williams, copied from the soul icon’s 1977 “Got to Give It Up”. They also aim to collect damages and profits from the song.
