OR vs. TCU: Score and Reaction for 2016 Alamo Bowl

While Patterson not might receive a congratulatory text from Briles after this remarkable victory, the two should share a toast to ruling the Big 12 and saving the bowl season.

TCU (11-2) rallied behind quarterback Bram Kohlhausen, who shook off a tough first half to throw for 351 yards, pass for two touchdowns and run for two more.

It took three overtimes for TCU to seal the win, and after Bram Kohlhausen scrambled for a touchdown to give TCU a 47-41 lead, the Frogs defense did just that. Kohlhausen took over for Boykin in the November 14 game against Kansas in which Boykin was hurt on the second snap. OR simply had no answers for an undermanned TCU offense in the last two quarters and overtime sessions, and the collapse will lead some to wonder, perhaps even head coach Mark Helfrich, whether the tenure of long-time UO coordinator/assistant Don Pellum should come to an end.

The Horned Frogs scored first in the third quarter, by capping off a 10-play drive with a 24-yard field goal by Jaden Oberkrom. Kohlhausen’s last touchdown, an 8-yard run in the third overtime, was the game victor.

Vernon Adams Jr. left the game after a helmet-to-helmet collision in the second quarter and did not return. “We just try to get our guy out and kind of turn the other cheek in a way, just walk away”.

Boykin threw for 3,575 yards with 31 touchdowns and ran for 612 yards and 10 more scores this season. When this one became a battle of backup signal callers, Kohlhausen proved to have a major advantage. Plays like that – or Darren Carrington’s 37-yard touchdown catch, or Royce Freeman’s two first-half touchdowns – delighted a small pocket of UO fans inside the overwhelmingly purple, and sold-out, Alamodome. Jeff Lockie would come in with 4:30 left in the first half.

The Ducks are touchdown favorites in their matchup against TCU, which airs Saturday afternoon on ESPN. They would also hold OR to a 3 and out, but the Ducks would attempt a fake punt as Ian Wheeler passed the ball down field to Charles Nelson. Adams Jr. was a highly regarded quarterback, but he missed several early games with a finger injury.

OR is making its 11th straight bowl appearance and had won four straight postseason games before the 42-20 loss to the Buckeyes on January 12. “But he understands.
