OR women’s cross country team wins national championship
“We didn’t get to run our A-team at conference or regionals this year, but we still did really well”.
She became the first Kentucky women’s team member to earn a NCAA individual bid since Cally Macumber in 2013.
Villanova sophomore Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) was announced as the victor of one of the top NCAA academic honors on Saturday afternoon at the awards ceremony following the NCAA Championships.
Irish sophomore Anna Rohrer is all too familiar with LaVern Gibson Course (Terre Haute, Indiana), racing to a third-place individual finish and guiding the University of Notre Dame women’s cross country team to an 11th-place finish on Saturday. “Through four girls we’re a top-five team”.
“They all have room for each other, no one is jealous of each other’s success. I think this teamwork is something we’re really excited about looking forward”.
Thomson placed seventh in the men’s race at the Southeast Regional last week. “But that doesn’t mean much on Saturday”.
Lining up before the race begins, runners Joe Crowlin, Garrett Lee, Luke Brahm, and Caleb Hummer stand ready to run as soon as the gunshot goes off. Stanford is the only program to better the feat with 24, as MI is third at 14. The Maroons will also look for strong performances out of third-years Cassidy McPherson and Kelsey Dunn and fourth-year Madeline Horvath who all picked up All-Region accolades this past weekend.
“We knew it was going to be competitive”, head coach Art Siemers said.
Margaret Thomson ’19 and Anna Chiodo-Ortiz ’19 also made the top 100, finishing in 71st and 73rd place, respectively.
Smith said he would be thrilled with a top-15 finish from the Cowgirls. This is still the highest finish for a freshman in program history, and now with the confidence of her recent eighth place performance, she can even be eyed as a favorite.
“I think on the right day our women could make the top 10”.
The Rams have experience on their side stepping to the line at Nationals. They all had great seasons, qualified for the championships and all ran really hard today. The Cal men’s team is making its first back-to-back National Championship appearances since the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Meanwhile, the Bears took second to Arkansas in the team standings for an automatic NCAA berth. “Our team is so great at supporting each other”. “She ran exactly how I wanted her to and led us well again”.
Individually, the victor from last year’s championship, Edward Cheserek, Patrick Tiernan, Zienasellasse, Justyn Knight and Grant Fisher are the top contenders for the men’s 10K title.
