Oregon college shooting: Gunman ‘asks victims to state their religion’ before
“The Oregon college shooting is the 45th school shooting this year, but it’s still easier to get a gun than a library card”, one tweet reads.
Authorities said the gunman was neutralized, but it wasn’t immediately clear whether the shooter was arrested or wounded.
The shooting took place at Umpqua Community College, which has about 3300 full-time students and 16,000 part-time students. There are other reports of up to 15 people dead, but those have not been confirmed.
Police have killed a 20-year-old gunman at a college in rural Oregon after a rampage that left at least 13 people dead.
The local fire district advised people to stay away from Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, about 180 miles south of Portland.
Douglas County Sherrif Douglas Hanlin said officers exchanged gunfire with the shooter and he was neutralized.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said students and faculty members were being bused to the nearby fairgrounds where they could be picked up.
Shelly Stefanich, spokeswoman for Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, said that the hospital was the only one in town and most likely to receive patients, but could not say how many were being treated there.
The White House said President Barack Obama was briefed on the situation by Homeland Security Adviser Lisa Monaco.
“The hearts and thoughts of all Oregonians are with the victims, their families and the entire UCC and Roseburg communities”.
Five people died during a school shooting in the cafeteria at Marysville-Pilchuch High School in Marysville, WA near Seattle in October 2014. In recent years, officials have tried to promote the region as a tourist destination for vineyards and outdoor activities.
