Oregon football adds BYU to 2022 schedule
Athletic director Tom Holmoe has tried to schedule games against top-flight opponents to gain national exposure and recognition – and eventually an invitation to a Power 5 conference. The BYU-Oregon series has split the winnings with three victories apiece.
BYU opened this season with a win at Nebraska, then beat Boise State before losing 24-23 at No. 10 UCLA on Saturday.
Today the BYU Cougars and Oregon Ducks announced that they scheduled a game to be played at Oregon in 2022. The Cougars lost both games played at Oregon in ’64 and ’65 before earning their first win against the Ducks in 1978, once again on the road. That week-two matchup is the first scheduled game for Oregon on the 2022 slate.
The teams have faced off six times over the years, four of which took place in Eugene. The last time the two teams met was in the Las Vegas Bowl in 2006 as Bronco Mendenhall and his Cougars demolished the Ducks 38-8. “We hope to develop a long-term relationship with Oregon”.
Including the Oregon game, the Cougars have four games scheduled in 2022.
But it’s hard to get too excited for games that are so far away – and may not occur at all, particularly if BYU’s conference affiliation changes at some point.
“This matchup fits our scheduling philosophy within the current landscape, which means facing top competition along with our Pac-12 opponents”, UO athletic director Rob Mullens said in a statement.
