Oregon Gunman Killed Himself After Plainclothes Officers Shot and Wounded Him
Investigators have not yet said whether they suspect a motive in last Thursday’s shooting, where Harper-Mercer killed eight students and a teacher before killing himself.
In addition to the 10 people who died in the massacre, including the gunman, nine others were wounded.
The gunman’s two-page note, left at the school, has not been released by law-enforcement officials but reportedly includes remarks about not having a girlfriend.
Both detectives fired a combined three shots from their.
Both women were long-time gun enthusiasts, not uncommon in many parts of America where gun ownership is prevalent and encouraged.
Douglas County District Attorney Rick Wesenberg in a statement said he found the officers were justified in using force against the gunman after he carried out the rampage Thursday at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. Sgt. Jeff Eichenbusch of Roseburg police said that Harper is part of the investigation, just as would be any person who was close to the gunman.
The mother of the man behind the mass killing in Oregon knew of her son’s fascination with guns and appears to have encouraged it, according to online postings over a decade.
Her personal collection included a Glock handgun and AR-15 and AK-37 semiautomatic rifles.
Public records link Harper to the same email address used in these posts from a Yahoo! user calling herself “Tweety Bird”. Harper wrote, “I keep two full mags in my Glock case. No one will be “dropping” by my house uninvited without acknowledgment”, according to a three-year-old posting by Harper on the Web.
Harper could not be located for comment and has not returned messages left by The Associated Press at her home.
The online posts made by Harper span over a year to nine years ago and give new insight on the shooter and his relationship with his mother.
Harper-Mercer’s father, Ian Mercer, told reporters in California that his son must have had “some kind of issue” with his mental health, and wondered “how on earth” he had been able to amass his weapons cache. His mother, Laurel Harper, was also a gun enthusiast who would accompany him on trips to shooting ranges in California and Oregon.
Harper-Mercer’s social media profiles suggested he was fascinated by the Irish Republican Army and frustrated by traditional organized religion. She attempted to eliminate disruptions to Adam Lanza’s life “entirely through hypervigilance and management of his symptoms”.
She wrote that she read aloud to her unborn son from Donald Trump’s “The Art of The Deal“.
And, it should be noted, she largely raised her son alone. And while she sought a few treatment for him, she rejected other help and was in denial about her son’s illness.
There are hospitals and clinics in Roseburg that offer walk-in crisis intervention programs, including a sprawling Veterans Affairs campus, but there is no place where people who are psychotic can go for round-the-clock care.
