Oregon, North Carolina can meet for Maui title

Underwood takes over a team which is losing three of it’s top six scorers from last season.

The games are played at the tiny Lahaina Civic Center, which holds roughly a couple of thousand people. With a win, UConn would go on to play the victor of North Carolina against Chaminade on November 22.

The Maui Invitational is traditionally one of the best early season tournaments in college basketball. Four teams, UConn (2010-11), North Carolina (2004-05, 2008-09) and MI (1988-89) began their seasons as Maui Invitational champions before culminating their season with an NCAA title. They defeated Gonzaga and Kentucky in the championship games.

“This tournament will do us a lot of good in that regard”.

“In the past, it’s been a great barometer for us to see where we are and where we need to be”, Miller said.

Do not underestimate any of the teams in this tournament, in particular UConn, Oregon and Tennessee. Dee Rowe was the head coach of the Huskies at the time.

The bracket for the eight-team tournament, which takes place November 21-23, was revealed on Tuesday morning. The bracket is balanced with two ESPN-ranked teams on each side, with No. 6 North Carolina likely awaiting the Cowboys-Huskies victor. All of the aforementioned teams are expected to be top-20 teams heading into the 2016-17 season.

The Vols and Badgers have met just three times previously, with UT owning a 2-1 edge and a win in the series’ only neutral-site clash (a 79-67 victory in the 1981 Far West Classic in Portland, Oregon).
