Oregon State at Michigan

The Beavers’ two freshman quarterbacks, Seth Collins and Marcus McMaryion, began Friday night’s game against Weber State alternating every two series … but that all changed in the third quarter.

Running back De’Veon Smith was one of the stars of Michigan’s 35-7 win over Oregon State Beavers and provided a huge boost to a team that struggled rushing the football against Utah.

Eight-plus months after Harbaugh was hired in a move hailed by graduates and fans of the school, he will lead the Wolverines in their home opener Saturday against Oregon State. Michigan’s offense demolished the Beavers, especially in the second half.

Chris Brown started the game in place of senior Storm Barrs-Wood and performed admirably in the first half of his opportunity: seven carries for 33 yards, a proficient 4.7 yards per carry.

On what Harbaugh felt running into the Big House for the first time as a head coach: “It’s mainly about the players, the coaches, their families”. He was able to get out of the pocket and convert third downs, and created overall havoc for the Michigan defense.

As the game went on, Rudock was no longer needed to shoulder the load for the Michigan offense. Smith says that offensive coordinator Tim Drevno was tough on both the offensive line and the running backs in practice this week. Quarterback Christian Hackenberg was 14-of-27 for 128 yards and a touchdown.

Smith scored his second TD with 12 seconds left in the first half to put Michigan up 17-7 and the Beavers never got back in the game.

Michigan kept pounding with Derrick Green and Ty Isaac for the last of the 35 unanswered points, but this was Smith’s moment.

SECRET WEAPON? Utah coach Kyle Whittingham put together a good game plan to spoil Harbaugh’s debut, and he might have some tips to pass along to Andersen, a good friend and former assistant coach. However, some mistakes they made resulted in them letting Michigan get the upper hand. But with a hard Big Ten schedule looming around corner, the Wolverines will need to get the offense working at the most optimal level it can over the next couple of weeks.
