Oregon State Beavers offer pair of 2017 California QBs
Redshirt sophomore Abraham Rodriguez ended an 8-match losing streak with a pivotal technical fall to lead the Oregon State wrestling team to a 21-13 victory over No. 20 Stanford on Thursday in a Pacific-12 Conference match at Burnham Pavilion.
Sophomore forward Jakob Poeltl, a three-time Pac-12 player of the week this season, is averaging 17.3 points and 8.9 rebounds.
When Utah’s Jordan Loveridge drew a foul on Reid and sank three consecutive free throws, the Utes moved in front by a single point with 2.2 seconds left. The Utes took the lead when Tucker drained another three to make the score 25-24. The Beavers briefly regained the lead, but the Utes staged 7-2 and 10-2 runs to take a 55-46 lead midway through the half.
OSU tied it at 27 and Utah had its first turnover of the half with under 6:30 remaining, which lead to another Oregon State bucket as it retook the lead.
Review confirmed the foul was called before time ran out, and Utah’s luck ran out as Thompson, above, sank all 3 free throws, this while GPII couldn’t watch until after the first two went down to seal the win, and start the celebration.
The trio of Jamie Weisner, Sydney Weise and Ruth Hamblin led Oregon State to their 23 point marginal win.
The teams continued to battle with each other and Loveridge drained a three to extend Utah’s lead to six. “We executed offensively and defensively in the last seven minutes better than we did in the entire game”.
The stakes were high, the atmosphere was charge and Pac-12 refs were in the building…so of course this produced one of the silliest finishes of the season.
“After that, we had some guys go out and really couldn’t control themselves”, Borrelli said.
The Beavers received nine of a possible 11 first-place votes and 98 of a possible 100 points in the poll. “With our back to the wall we responded against a well-coached and talented team that had won five games in a row”. The Utes followed up the disaster in Palo Alto with a double-digit lead to Cal. Last time Utah played the Ducks, it was an 18-point defeat.
Oregon State: Reid, suspended four games after tripping a referee in Oregon State’s loss at Utah on January 17, returned to action on Thursday and scored eight points.
With the class of 2016 signed, sealed and delivered, the Oregon State Beavers coaching staff is already hard at work to secure pledges for the 2017 recruiting cycle.
Utah plays at OR on Sunday.
The Beavers host the Buffs, who fell 76-56 to conference leading OR tonight in Eugene, Saturday evening.
