Then, in 1954, Congress struck out the word “Armistice” and inserted the word “Veterans” to honor American veterans of all wars.
The overall message was not to mark this day each year as a celebration of victory, but rather as a celebration of those who advanced America’s commitment to freedom and made victory possible.

Veterans of the Civil War will have a new memorial at Veterans Memorial Park in Wichita next year.
They paid tribute to veterans from past wars and those returning from recent conflicts.
One of the World War II vets was Ivan McQueen, who served in the 104th Infantry Division (the Timberwolves) during the Battle of the Bulge and continued across Germany to the Elbe River, where they met the Russian army.
The VA has hosted the parade for years and it gives veterans there the opportunity to see the parade.
Inevitably, someone says something demonstrating confusion over the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. This day is not just to remember fallen soldiers, but all veterans – anyone who wore an American military uniform and swore to defend the country. Most of today’s Veterans Day events, including the parade through downtown Dallas, will be over by the time night falls. Former Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, a World War II Navy veteran, was the parade’s grand marshal and recalled how he and his comrades pulled together and had a common objective.
