Orlando mayor wants city to buy Pulse nightclub for memorial
But the city’s mayor says he wants to turn the club into a permanent memorial where people can continue to pay their respects to the victims.
On June 12, 49 people were slain at the LGBT club by gunman Omar Mateen, who was killed by police.
On Sunday, a nonprofit established by owner Barbara Poma, the onePULSE Foundation, announced on social media that the nightclub would reopen as a permanent memorial.
At some point I think the city needs to gain control [or] purchase the Pulse site and then make some determination, with a lot of input, on what a permanent memorial might look like.
On Wednesday, Dyer and Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel visited the makeshift memorial that has sprung up on the site.
A spokesperson with the City of Orlando says the city has had exploratory discussions with the owners of Pulse Nightclub about the future of the site.
The city of Orlando released a statement to ABC Orlando affiliate WFTV expressing “interest in acquiring the property”, and adding, “I$3 f the city determines it is in the best interest of the community to acquire the property, we will go through that public process to do so”. Regarding Poma’s wishes for the club, Brady told the Sentinel, “She really doesn’t know what she wants to do other than her desire is that the site become a memorial”. “It’s sacred ground to her”.
