Orlando shooter’s wife tried to stop attack

An FBI official said authorities believe Mateen’s wife, Noor Salman, knew about the plot ahead of time, but they are reluctant to charge her on that basis alone.

In interviews with federal investigators, Salman also allegedly acknowledged driving Mateen to the Pulse nightclub at least once before her husband launched the assault, according to the official who was not authorized to speak publicly.

USA investigators say they have uncovered strong indications the gunman in the deadly Orlando shooting had become radicalized and potentially inspired by foreign terrorist groups.

Other outlets have reported that she recently went with Mateen to the nightclub and that she accompanied him as he went to a gun store earlier this month to buy ammunition. Reuters also quotes law enforcement sources as saying Salman is the subject of an investigation.

Comey said investigators introduced him to confidential sources, followed him and reviewed some of his communications, but Mateen claimed he made the remarks in anger because co-workers were teasing and discriminating against him because he was Muslim.

Smith’s husband, Chris Callen, told The Canadian Press that Mateen had frequented Pulse for the last three years.

Unlike the four Disney World theme parks, Downtown Disney, which was recently renamed Disney Springs, doesn’t have security and bag check before entry.

“He was mentally unstable and mentally ill and he was obviously disturbed, deeply”, she said. Forty-nine people were killed, and 53 others were injured.

He “might have been gay but chose to hide his true identity out of anger and shame”, she added. She sought divorce from him in 2011.

The claims have raised questions over whether Mateen, who was married with a wife and child, was conflicted about his own sexuality, despite his family claiming the massacre could have been motivated by homophobia after seeing two men kiss while on a recent visit to Miami.

The crime could be based on several motives: Mateen’s homophobic views, his ties with radical Islamists or a mental disorder.
